Environmental Engineering

__________________________________________________________________________________

The Environmental Engineering Department is primarily aimed at delivering innovative, efficient and cost-effective solutions to the country's environmental problems through the development of technology transfer and training of highly qualified human resources. These goals are developed through the work of basic and applied research on topics such as treatment, management and reuse of water (potable, wastewater, water bodies), treatment of leachates from landfills, soil characterization and contaminated soil remediation, environmental risk assessment of contaminated sites, climate change effects on water quality, assessment and treatment of sludge and waste, waste assessment, environmental microbiology and automated control of processes, among others.

The faculty is composed of 9 researchers, 23 technicians, and about 100 research assistants carrying out undergraduate, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral studies, who perform their thesis work on projects associated with the research conducted in the department.

The department includes the Environmental Engineering Laboratory and a pilot plant for the development of wastewater treatment projects. The laboratory has experimental areas for the development of projects related to water, soil, waste, microbiology and molecular biology. The lab includes chromatography equipment (ions, gases and liquids), atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and carbon-nitrogen analyzers (for solids and liquids), among others.
