The Hydraulics Department is one of the founders of the Institute of Engineering and is part of the Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering Head Office. Currently, their academic staff includes 12 researchers, 11 technicians and 60 research assistants, the latter makes the coordination with the largest number of fellows to conduct undergraduate and graduate research programs; 45% of academic staff holds doctoral degrees, 41% and 14% hold master's degrees and four of the researchers belong to the National System of Researchers (SNI).

To develop its activities, the Hydraulics Department manages various facilities such as a channel of variable slope, an irregular wave channel, a sand table and models of hydraulic structures, which allow researchers to simulate various phenomena and to obtain specific solutions and participate in a relevant way in solving problems related to the construction and operation of projects that deal with the management and control of water. Its proven technical ability is confirmed by the important patronage it receives to study and propose technical solutions to the problems faced by public sector institutions such as CNA, GDF, CFE, among others.

The Hydraulics Department provides an excellent place for college students interested in the discipline and wishing to be involved in the projects conducted therein so as to strengthen their academic training. The department offices are located in building 5 of the Institute of Engineering.
