Structures and Materials

__________________________________________________________________________________

Since the beginning of the Institute in 1956, this department has been aimed at conduction analytical and experimental studies on the following topics:

  1. Behavior and design of structures exposed to various static, dynamic and deterioration actions.

  2. Evaluation of structural systems.

  3. Development and evaluation of methods of repair and rehabilitation of structures.

  4. Structural safety and durability.

  5. Evaluation and characterization of building materials.

  6. Auscultation and monitoring of the physical condition of structures during their construction or service life.

  7. Preparation, review and updating of standards for design and construction. Guidelines for evaluation of structures.

In Mexico, the experimental investigation of structures has been carried out essentially in the Institute of Engineering. The experimental study of the behavior of structures, both in the laboratory and in the field, has clarified several aspects of the actual behavior of buildings. This has been instrumental in establishing the design and analysis procedures in place and to validate innovative building systems. For example, studies have been essential to develop the design and construction standards of the Federal District. The test procedures of the Institute have been a reference for the rest of the country and other countries, particularly in Latin America.

The department is located in building 2 of the Institute. It consists of ten researchers, seven academic technicians and 25 research assistants.
