Rock Mechanics Lab

___________________________________________________________________

This laboratory is part of the
Geotechnics Department.
It began operations in 1958.
The laboratory is run by
Dr. Miguel P. Romo Organista.
It is located in building 7,
II UNAM. Ciudad Universitaria

SCOPE

The lab studies the mechanical behavior of granular soils: sand and gravel, as well as rock mechanics.

ACTIVITIES

International research on the behavior of coarse granular materials in a triaxial chamber of 1.13 m in diameter by 2.5 m in height. The results were instrumental in the design and construction of dams over 100 m high.

Testing chamber for plane strain tests to compare the strength with that obtained in a triaxial chamber. There have been studies of the microstructure of the clay of the valley of Mexico, using a scanning electron microscope.

MAJOR WORKS AND RECENT PROYECTS

Research on cast-in-place piles in a mass of granular soil under different stress and density conditions has been conducted.

Synthetic materials have been tested (EPS) by using electron microscopy.

EQUIPMENT

Triaxial cube for testing granular soils and rock mechanics specimens of 1 m per side (1 m3).
