Renewable Energy and Bioclimatic Design

__________________________________________________________________

This laboratory is part of the
Mechanics and Energy Department.
It began operations in 2007.
The laboratory is run by
Dr. Rafael Almanza Salgado and
Dr. David Morillon Galvez
It is located in building 18,
II UNAM. Ciudad Universitaria.

SCOPE

These facilities are designed to measure the thermal conductivity of building materials, to evaluate different materials and the transmittance of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and simulations of the Sun's path to identify and assess the efficiency of shaded buildings. These studies use simulation software for dynamic behavior, with which tests are done to establish both energy and mass flows, the solar position, and the value of solar radiation.

ACTIVITIES

In the laboratory, we developed maps of solar radiation and bioclimates, which have had an impact on the energy sector and construction companies, which have used the maps extensively. The maps are based on extensive experimental and theoretical studies, such as:

  • Selective glass films
  • Reflective film hubs
  • Thermal characterization of building materials

So far the maps have been used extensively for both theoretical and practical purposes within construction developers and the energy sector, which have confirmed the results based on the reliability of the data.
