River Modeling and Sand Table

_____________________________________________

This laboratory is part of the
Hydraulics Department.
It began operations in 1965.
The laboratory is run by
M. Víctor Franco and
M. Javier Osnaya Romero
It is located in Building 11 of the
II UNAM. Ciudad Universitaria

SCOPE

  • This laboratory has a confined space where a sand table is indoors and the other, outdoors.
  • Originally studied in this space were maritime models. Currently, it is used to study rivers in distorted models, which require a large physical space.

ACTIVITIES

  • The main projects that have been carried out at this facility are: maritime models of the thermoelectric plants in Guaymas and Manzanillo; collapse of reservoirs, movable floor model of the Colorado River, whose aim was to investigate the influence of protective works constructed by the United States in the Mexican margin.

MAJOR WORKS AND RECENT PROYECTS

  • Safe harbor to study streams and reservoirs, taking into account the geometry of the cliffs of Laguna Verde, and the study of the behavior of the river Suchiate using a hydraulic model.
  • Currently working on the hydraulic model of river Mezcalapa - Carrizal and Samaria, and the behavior of the recesses of the "Tintillo", "Census" and the derivation of the lagoon "The Zapotes" to the lagoon "San Julian".
  • The main projects developed in this laboratory are models of rivers and the design of hydraulic structures, among which are: breakwaters, diversion channels and bridges.
  • Recent projects that have been developed in the sand table are related to the control structures of the rivers Carrizal, La Sierra and Pichucalco, Tabasco.

EQUIPMENT

  • Speed meters and level meters.
  • The laboratory has traditional velocity meters and advanced technology meters such as the ADV.
  • Highly specialized sensors.
  • Sand Table
