Transportation Engineering is the "application of technological and scientific processes for the planning, design, operation and administration of all modes of transportation in order to provide a safe, quick, comfortable, convenient, affordable and environment-friendly mobility to people and goods" (Institute of Transportation Engineers, ITE).
A transportation engineer is responsible for the planning, design, construction and administration of transportation systems by means of knowledge and methods in Civil Engineering, Finance, Operations Research, etc.

Several groups from the Institute of Engineering are dedicated to Transportation Engineering. One group studies traffic, logistics and freight transportation, urban transport and information systems (Laboratory of Transportation and Territorial Systems, LTTS).
Another group studies pavements, structural design, geometric design, construction, conservation and operation of land transportation (Highway Transportation Laboratory).
A third group studies other topics and aspects related to transportation, such as vehicles and environment.
