Natural Disaster Engineering

__________________________________________________________________________________

The purpose of natural disaster engineering is to have probabilistic assessments of risk considering the characteristics of each natural disaster and the vulnerability of structures to be analyzed.

Studied natural disasters are earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, hail, wind, volcanic eruption (ash fall, lava flow, etc.) storms and tsunamis. In addition to the above are landslides and mudslides induced by earthquakes and heavy rain. The team studies the vulnerability of all types of structures such as buildings, roads, bridges, warehouses, silos, shops, cinemas, etc. and includes the study of the contents of the aforementioned.

The risk results are presented in terms of percentages of economic losses, injuries and loss of life, amongst others. The team has created and implemented computer systems compatible with Geographic Information Systems to conduct research and carry out projects.
