Mechanical Engineering research focuses on the design and development of all types of machines and mechanisms, which generally includes the following stages: conceptualization of different options and selecting the most appropriate; overall design to define the configuration of the machine or mechanism, selection of materials for the components (including advanced composites), kinematic, dynamic, and stress analysis, and detailed design of each component taking into account the processes to be used for the manufacturing and assembly processes.

Of course, it is necessary to test and, often make changes to the machine according to the results of those tests. Sometimes this method must be repeated several times.
The team also conducts test development and characterization of specific nondestructive materials. In addition, academics explore theoretical developments such as mathematical modeling, simulation and optimization. Examples of mechanical engineering projects at the Institute are: development of a highly maneuverable vehicle, development of rotating machines including two pumps and a steam expander and mathematical modeling of seismic energy dissipating device.
