Infrastructure and Earth Sciences

________________________________________________________________________________________

A significant number of research projects done at the Institute are related to infrastructure and Earth Sciences. In these projects diverse objective and goals are set. Mainly, the elaboration of design and standard manuals, the proposal of innovative solutions, as well as the supervision and revision of research projects in each step of the design and/or construction process.
The research topics carried out in Infrastructure and Earth Sciences are as varied as engineering itself.

Research for transportation infrastructure is also a priority in this area. Projects include bridges and highways, seaports and airports. In their design and construction various other elements are considered in order to make the completed project successful, such as logistics, hydraulics, environmental engineering, soil mechanics, and structural engineering, including the responses of these structures in the event of an earthquake.
This area also includes research related to channels for water irrigation, tunnels for large water drainage, water supply via aqueducts, construction projects to protect against floods and water treatment plants.

Infrastructures and Earth Sciences also works towards finding solutions for important issues like petrochemical plants, housing units and other special buildings including the restructuring and foundation of old and historical buildings.
In Earth Sciences, the team develops all projects that have to do with methods and techniques that explore our planet as well as with the investigation of physical phenomena to understand their behavior, locate natural resources and support the creation of new projects in infrastructure. This includes studies of seismic risk and danger, seismic microzonation and general studies about generation, propagation, and the recording of seismic waves.
