Procedure for patenting an invention

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

An invention is a way to solve a problem in the technical field. Patents are granted to protect inventions that are new, the result of an inventive step and industrial application. Administratively, the inventor should submit an IMPI document (patent application) that describes the invention so that a person with skills in the technical field can reproduce it.

This document should include existing and proposed solutions about how other people have faced the particular problem and what is the difference with the solution proposed. The Director General of Legal Affairs (DGAJ) is responsible for submitting all applications for patents belonging to members of the UNAM community.

In this document, the patent application is examined and a response will be given within approximately 36 to 48 months.
