The size and extent of the facilities, the number of members, and operational characteristics of the research projects carried-out by the Institute require rendering of technical-administrative services to develop the activities and maintain the well being of its staff members. The Technical Secretary's functions are:

  1. To plan, coordinate and execute preventive and corrective maintenance work at sites and building facilities on campus and the Institutes external locations. The maintenance work includes remodeling and expanding projects, or new constructions as required.

  2. To coordinate, plan and execute construction projects relative to the Institute's 2004-2020 Modernization Master Plan.

  3. To give technical support to the Institute's staff through resources that belongs to the Technical Secretary to contribute to the efficient development of activities and tasks

Secretary’s priorities are:

  1. To use modern and adequate infrastructure to conduct national and international competitive research towards resolving major national and regional problems, training new experts and strengthening partnerships and alliances with the private sector.

  2. To use national laboratories for the Institute's research areas.

  3. To consolidate the technological presence of UNAM in Juriquilla, Querétaro, through the headquarters of the Institute of Engineering at UNAM.

  4. To be present at the UNAM's Morelia campus.

The Technical Secretary includes the following tasks:

  1. To give technical support to the director by providing on-going and timely updates on the status of the physical infrastructure, facilities and the Institute's Modernization Master Plan.

  2. To coordinate the maintenance activities of the physical plant and installations. To schedule and supervise the execution of maintenance to the physical plant and installations in thirteen buildings and other areas of the Institute.

  3. To give technical support to organize academic events. It coordinates the operation of the "Emilio Rosenblueth" Seminar Hall as well as lending audio-visual equipment for academic and administrative events carried-out at the Institute.

  4. To photocopy and bind. It coordinates the black and white and color photocopying services as well as document binding services.

  5. To oversee the metal-mechanics and carpentry shops. It supports the academic staff of the Institute to produce pieces, models and the equipment required by research projects. Staff of these shops also works in maintenance and remodeling of facilities.
