The Institute of Engineering came into being in 1956 as the research division of the School of Engineering. It currently belongs to the Scientific Research Subsystem (SIC), where engineering research has been consolidated within the UNAM. The Institute of Engineering’s (II) vision is to become the best and most relevant institute in Mexico in order to solve national problems and to create new generations of engineers and researchers who are committed to the continuous development of their country.

The Institute of Engineering, like other institutes at UNAM, is led by a director who is assigned by the Governing Board from a list of three candidates proposed by the university’s rector. The director remains at this post for four years and may be reelected only once. Requirements to be director of the II are: to be Mexican by birth; to enjoy a general esteem as an honorable and prudent person; and to have published works that credit the transcendence and high quality of his contributions to research, teaching or professional work in his specialty.

The director’s main functions are:

  • To manage and coordinate the Institute’s academic and administrative activities.
  • To prepare the budget and supervise its execution once it has been authorized.
  • To preside over the Internal Council and to be the Institute’s link to the rector’s office and to the Technical Council of Scientific Research, to which he reports the Institute’s work and development plans in an annual basis.

The current director is Dr. Luis Agustín Álvarez Icaza Longoria. He took office in February 2016.
